Chapter Four

The new medical examiner came to the station with the results of the autopsy conducted on William. The day after William died, the security at the station was still higher than usual and he was asked at reception why he wanted to see the lieutenant. He gave an evasive response, and he was allowed into the station.

The day before, the lieutenant signed off the transfer of the former captain to the FBI's custody. Noah felt it was time the Bureau took over the case and provided more security for the suspect. With the captain out of the station, attention shifted to the investigation into William’s death while in custody.

"Look at this," the medical examiner said, pointing to William's neck in one of the photographs on the table. "There is a puncture wound. At first, it appeared to be nothing more than an insect bite, but on closer examination, I discovered that it was made by a needle."

"A needle?" Noah interjected.

"Yes, a needle. It is the only place on his body that we found such a tiny puncture. It is not your everyday kind of needle. The eye of the needle must be very tiny and sharp to achieve this result. Again, note the redness of the skin."

"Okay, what does that tell us? Is it what he was injected with that caused his death?"

"That is an entirely different thing. I think the deceased struggled with the needle. His fingerprints were around the area. As to what was in the syringe, I don't know. We don't know."
